by Dennis Sullivan editor@ewcnews.com July 18, 2014 Crete-Monee School District’s new superintendent said Tuesday he’s “looking forward to the opportunity to build trust and work together.” Speaking during the regular monthly board of education meeting, Nathaniel Cunningham said his family is moving to Monee and his youngest child is enrolling as a freshman at Crete-Monee High School. Residents at the meeting in the Crete-Monee High School cafeteria applauded Cunningham, who was assistant superintendent, Human Resources, of McLean County Unit District No. 5, since 2009.

Cunningham recently obtained a PhD in educational, instructional and curriculum supervision. From 2002-2009, Cunningham served seven years at a Normal-area high school, leaving as principal. He was graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1987. Board President Nakia Hall introduced Cunningham, as well as Chief School Business Official Ann Williams and Assistant Supt of Student Affairs Monica Spence at the beginning of the board meeting. Former Talala Principal Lyle Neal, now assistant superintendent, human resources, was on vacation. “They’re already hitting the ground running in only two weeks,” Hall said of the new administration. Hall later persuaded board members to remove the personnel report from the meeting’s consent agenda to allow the new administration to review and recommend at the next meeting.

Earlier in the meeting, Spence delivered a comprehensive report on the issue of homeless students, explaining that a repeatedly strengthened federal act places homeless students’ right to a full education and to privacy above any school district claims. Cunningham, who had requested the report, appeared to embrace the idea. “As a school district, the least we’re going to do is follow the law,” he said. —————————————————————— Original material copyright 2014 Eastern Will County News; all rights reserved. . . . . . … . . . …. . . .. . . . .. . . . .. . . . . . . . . …… . . . . .. . . . . . …. . . .
